Omeprazole

Omeprazole belongs to a group of drugs called proton-pump inhibitors, which work by reducing the amount of acid made in the stomach. It relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing and persistent cough. When taken on a daily basis, acid reflux symptoms are greatly reduced without the need to time doses which is true with antacids and most over the counter treatments.

What is it?

Acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux, is a digestive condition where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, the tube that connects the throat to the stomach. This can lead to various uncomfortable symptoms, including heartburn, regurgitation, chest pain, and difficulty swallowing. It’s normal to experience acid reflux and heartburn occasionally, but if you have acid reflux (heartburn) more than twice a week, you may require daily medications to manage your condition.

How does Omeprazole help?

Omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), helps with acid reflux by reducing stomach acid production. It blocks the proton pump enzyme in the stomach lining, relieving symptoms like heartburn and regurgitation, promoting healing of the esophagus and stomach lining, and preventing recurrence of symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Omeprazole is an oral capsule, prescription medication that is FDA approved to treat conditions with excess stomach acid including Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

Omeprazole takes about 1 hour to block the production of stomach acid and its maximal effect occurs around 2 hours after beginning therapy. The action of omeprazole can continue for about 3 days. Omeprazole must continue to be taken on a daily basis for the stomach acid to remain low. If Omeprazole is only taken on an “as needed” basis, you will most likely experience breakthrough acid reflux.

Omeprazole is usually taken once per day, with or without food. Omeprazole is commonly available in capsule form. Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Don’t crush or chew the capsule. Omeprazole needs to be taken constantly each day to suppress stomach acid.

The side effects of Omeprazole are generally mild but side effects may occur:

  • Digestive System:  Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain
  • Central Nervous System:  Headaches or dizziness
  • Nutrient Absorption:  Prolonged use may interfere with the absorption of certain nutrients, like magnesium, calcium and vitamin B12.

If you forget to take your daily dose of Omeprazole, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Keep this medication in the original container that you received it in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).
